The Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences was established in 1948 by the distinguished efforts of Dr. Moustafa Khalidi, at that time was called “National Nursing School”. Dr. Mohammad Khaled together with Dr. Khalidi then joined efforts to affiliate this school with the Makassed General Hospital in 1950. The school operated within the hospital until 1977, then relocated to the present building established by his Excellency late Prime Minister Mr. Saeb Salam, President of the Makassed Philanthropic Islamic Association at that time. Technical programs in nursing and midwifery were offered until 15 October 1986, whereby a decree number 3485 was issued to certify the college to offer B.S degrees in Nursing and Medical Lab Technology. A major mile stone was achieved when the decree number 16404 was issued on 23 February 2006 whereby the school became the College of Nursing and Health Sciences with BS degrees in Respiratory Therapy and Medical Radiation Technology added to its programs.
The Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences operates within the Philosophy and goals of the mother Association. Attendance:
Examinations and Make-ups
Evaluations and Promotions.
The Student’s evaluation is comprehensive to include performance in class, clinical assignments, professional attitude and mannerisms.
A semester and yearly average of 60 for practical nurse, 65 for first year B.S students and 70 for second, and third year B.S students, is required for students` promotion.
Probations and Failures
A. Placement on Probation.
A student will be placed on probation for any of the following reasons, if he/she fails:
N.B: The probation is the last chance for a student to make-up any deficiencies. A probation period may be extended only once. This is made exceptionally by a decision from faculty/administration.
B. Removal of Probation
At the end of a semester or summer session, a probation may be removed if the student:
C. Repeating the year
A student will be required to repeat the year if he/she fails:
N.B: A student repeating the year is required to attend classes regularly, and repeat all failed courses required for that academic year. Repetition is allowed only once where failure then implies that the student will be dropped out of the program.
Contracts:
Students pay a registration fees after completing registration requirements. Tuition fees are paid in installments during the academic year. Students, who desire to sign a contract with Makassed General Hospital (MGH), shall fill an application form explaining and providing evidence for their need for this kind of assistance. Applications are distributed to students at the end of the fall semester where they have to demonstrate academic credentials for that purpose. Contracts imply that students are granted a loan to exempt them from tuition fees provided they commit themselves to work at MGH after graduation for the duration of the contract. Accordingly, students will only pay annual registration fees.
Credit System:
At the end of the probation period that follows registration and admission to the first year of the BS program, and based on their evaluations, students may be transferred or chose to transfer to the credit system. This allows them to take a minimum of 9 credits during the fall and spring semesters and 4 credits during the summer session. Second and third year BS students may also be transferred to the credit system based on performance evaluations and recommendations of their faculty for that purpose. This implies that the program will be distributed over a maximum period of 5 years during which students have to pass all required didactic and clinical courses.
Students who have signed a contract with MGH and are transferred to the credit system during their course of study will have to pay for all courses they are required to repeat or were not allowed to take due to failure in certain prerequisites. That is, the contract will be suspended for the academic year the student is required to repeat, and he/she will have to pay for the fees of the repeated year. The contract will be reactivated upon success of the student in course requirements of that year. Students who are repeating exams of failed courses will have to pay one third the credit value of that course.
A student who failed the theory but passed the practicum component of a nursing course, will repeat both the theory and the clinical, if his/her clinical grade is less than 80%. If the clinical grade is above 80% the student will repeat 50% of the requirements and pay for the 50% of the clinical credits only.
N.B. Transfer to credit system may only be undertaken during the probation period of the first year, or after semester evaluation during first, second and third year of study.
Conditions for transfer from another Academic Institution
Student applying for transfer should have passed courses required for the program at the institution with a minimum average of 65%. Otherwise, student has to repeat the courses according to the grading system of the College. Equivalence is made for a maximum of 49% of the program courses.

N.B: A warning and a notice holds valid for the three academic years. Any three warnings whether for academic or behavioral reasons may result in a decision for dismissal from college.
